About Illinois
Illinois, known as the
Land of
Lincoln, is one of the more exciting and thriving of
America's
Midwestern states. Located on the southwestern shores of
Lake Michigan,
Illinois is home to Windy City of
Chicago, one of the world’s
great metropolises and the third largest city in the U.S.
The
Chicago Metropolitan Area is
enormous, extending across most of Northern Illinois and even reaching into a
few counties in neighboring Indiana and
Wisconsin. This IL region is densely populated by a wide variety of ethnic
groups and is a heavily industrialized area.
Census 2000 reported Illinois’ population as 12,419,293. The city of
Chicago proper held close
to three million, while the
Chicagoland Area had more than nine million. Winter weather around Lake
Michigan can be quite unpredictable, with lake-effect storms dumping large
amounts of snowfall.
Illinois looks forward to a bright
and prosperous future as one of
America's
most successful regions. Illinois residents display the proud and enduring
midwestern work ethic and the results show in the accomplishments of the region.
