New York Trooper's Cruiser Sideswiped By Tractor Trailer

"Wheatland, N.Y.-- New York State police are investigating why a tractor trailer hit a trooper's car on the thruway Tuesday night near mile marker 371 in Wheatland.

Police said the truck, which was carrying two trailers, sideswiped Trooper Derek Cunningham's car, then rolled on its side. The officer was in the parked car writing a ticket.

Todd Carter, of Utah, witnessed the crash in his rearview mirror.

"It was dark. I looked behind me and saw the truck and all of a sudden it disappeared off the road, he said.

The trooper and the truck driver were trapped in their vehicles, but were not seriously injured.

Captain Michael Nigrelli of the NY State police, said, "There was a lot of property damage involved here, but no one was seriously injured its unclear why it happened, but there could have been worse consequences.

The truck driver was taken by helicopter to the Strong Memorial Hospital for evaluation. Police suspect he made an unsafe lane change and was inattentive. Police are talking to him and looking into whether the truck had any safety problems. They also plan to reconstruct the accident Wednesday morning in hopes of determining what happened.

Cunningham, a 19-year veteran of Troop T out of Buffalo, was treated for neck and shoulder injuries."
