Interstate 81, also known as the "Penn-Can Highway", covers six states and 824 miles. Exactly 158 of those miles are in the state of New York.

I-81 is a major north south corridor. When speaking about it on a nationwide scale, it is the next major road west after I-95. Starting at the Canadian border in Fishers Landing, NY it leaves New York State via Syracuse and Binghamton before crossing into Pennsylvania at its northern border near the town of Great Bend and then continuing to follow the Appalachian Mountains south then west.

While it can be a pleasant trip down I-81 it is definitely a truck route rather than being especially scenic. It doesn’t serve any major metropolitan areas but is the backbone between medium sized destinations such as Roanoke and Winchester, Virginia; Hagerstown, Maryland; Harrisburg and Scranton, Pennsylvania; and Binghamton and Syracuse, New York. After passing through Watertown, NY (Fishers Landing) Interstate 81 crosses the St. Lawrence Seaway to meet Ontario 401 in Canada.
