Interstate 88 is entirely within the U.S. state of New York. I-88’s western end is at an intersection with Interstate 81 in Binghamton, and its eastern end is at an intersection with Interstate 90 in Schenectady, New York.

I-88 has a total length of 131 miles. Also known as the Senator Warren M. Anderson Expressway, I-88 traverses the New York Counties of Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, Schoharie, and Schenectady. The exits were named, not numbered, until the road was completed in the late 1980s.

Originally in the 70's, Interstate 88 was planned to extended past its current terminus at the New York State Thruway (Exit 25A), through to the Albany, NY The Cross-town Connection part of Route 7, and Alternate Route 7 were built along the original grade of the once proposed extension), up to Bennington, Vermont - through to Manchester, Vermont (I-293 and NH 101 are part of the original plans), and eventually end at I-95 south of Portsmouth, NH.

The U.S. 7 interchange, and Bennington Bypass are remnants of the extension plans; only recently has the Bennington Bypass been built on the original highway grading.

The other end of Interstate 88 currently terminates at the Schenectady-Rotterdam Interchange of the New York State Thruway. Interstate 88 was planned to end at the current Schenectady East Interchange, sharing Exit 25 with Interstate 90. This plan was never brought to construction due to the amount of residential development south of the Schenectady-East Interchange. Also, the mountainous terrain around Altamont, where part of this routing was planned, would have proven difficult.

Today, Interstate 88 serves the Capital Region as a direct route to Binghamton and the Southern Tier. Anyone taking a ride on Interstate 88 will be impressed by the lovely views and scenery provided in Schoharie and Schenectady Counties.
