Interstate 76:  The Eastern Interstate 76 is a major east-west Interstate highway across eastern Ohio and Pennsylvania. It joins the Philadelphia metropolitan area with Pittsburgh and Akron, Ohio. Interstate 76 forms the majority of the mainline Pennsylvania Turnpike. When the Pennsylvania Turnpike opened in 1940, I-76 was the first long-distance rural highway in the United States and was popularly known as the "tunnel highway" because of the seven mountain tunnels along its route.

The western entrance to I-76 is at the OH-PA state line, and the eastern entrance is at the PA-NJ state line at the Walt Whitman Bridge in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Interstate 76 runs 350 miles through Pennsylvania. The entire length of I-76, 435 miles, is part of the National Highway System. Interstate 76 is also known as The Pennsylvania Turnpike from the Ohio state line to Exit 326 and the Schuylkill Expressway from Exit 326 to the PA-NJ state line.

I-76 interchanges with many other Interstates along its 350 mile journey through Pennsylvania. Shortly after leaving the eastern terminus it interchanges with I-95. Next it interchanges with I-476 (south) and I-276 (north), which is its connection to the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

About 60 miles out of the Philadelphia area, I-76 spurs I-176 feeding the Reading, PA area. When it reaches Harrisburg, I-76 has its chance to interchange with I-81 and I-83 south of the city. Once I-76 hits the more mountainous and isolated portions of Pennsylvania, Interchanges with I-70 and I-99 give it a north – south reach.

Just east of Pittsburg the I-70 and I-76 concurrence comes to an end with I-76 heading north – west and passing Pittsburg to the north as it makes its way to the Pennsylvania – Ohio border. Interstate 76 serves most of Pennsylvania's major urban areas, with the main east-west section serving the Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia areas and its Northeastern Extension, I-476 serving the Allentown-Bethlehem and Scranton-Wilkes-Barre areas.

Emergencies are handled by calling 911 along the Interstate portion of I-76, and by call boxes every mile on the Turnpike portion. Help may also be obtained by calling *11 on the Turnpike portion. Traffic cameras are located at New Stanton, Breezewood (Eastbound and Westbound), Harrisburg East and Valley Forge.

The majority of I-76’s Turnpike section is a toll road. EZ-Pass is available for use on the Pennsylvania Turnpike portion of I-76 and at the Walt Whitman Bridge, Interstate 76’s easternmost point in PA.
