DOT#:     -or-    Carrier Name:

Interstate 78:  I-78 began its life in Pennsylvania as an upgrade of U.S. Route 22. In 1965, it became one of the first Interstates in Pennsylvania to be completed. Of the Interstates total 144 mile length, 75 miles of it call Pennsylvania home.

I-78 is born out of I-81 about 5 miles south of Fredericksburg, PA. Where I-81 takes an abrupt turn to the north, I-78 continues on what looks like I-81’s original intended path. It continues north-east reaching the Allentown – Bethlehem, PA area where it crosses but does not interchange with I-476, the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. There is an indirect connection by exiting I-78 at U.S. Highway 22 just west of Allentown, and then entering I-476 about a mile down 22 where there is a full interchange.

Interstate 78 then takes a southerly path around the bottom of the Allentown – Bethlehem area and the then 6 lane roadway crosses over the locally popular South Mountain, then continues north – east where it crosses over into New Jersey just south of Easton, PA into New Jersey’s Hunterdon County. From there it’s almost a straight line east to New York City.

This last leg of I-78 in Pennsylvania from the Leigh County line through to New Jersey is know as the Walter J. Dealtrey Memorial Highway. The western half of I-78 from exit 8 to exit 53 in Allentown is known as the 78th Division Highway and/or the William Penn Highway.
