Interstate 80: I-80 in Pennsylvania is a 311 mile piece of the 2900 mile Intercontinental Interstate 80. I-80 is the second longest (I-90 is the longest) Interstate highway in the United States. It has its beginnings in San Francisco, CA and terminates at the New York City Suburb of Teaneck, New Jersey. Before entering the state of Pennsylvania at Mercer County, I-80 is a toll road in Indiana (The Indiana Toll Road) as well as in Ohio (The Ohio Turnpike). Interstate 80 breaks from the tolls just outside of Youngstown, Ohio and becomes the free “Keystone Shortway”, a shortcut across Northern Pennsylvania, constructed especially for the I-80 build-out toward New York.

The majority of I-80 is a rocky and mountainous path all the way to the New Jersey border. It is only at its western most parts that there is any appreciable length of level roadway. I-80 truly is a shortcut through Pennsylvania and does not serve any major cities or urban centers like other Interstates. It is however one of the more scenic Interstate routes and sees its fair share of long haul, coast to coast traffic rather than state to state and more localized travel.

The opening of the two 465 foot Delaware Water Gap Toll bridges in 1953 marked the first completed construction of I-80 in Pennsylvania. It wasn’t until 1959, however, that the first actual roadway construction began in Corsica, Pennsylvania. The completion of the Keystone Shortway was heralded in on September 17th, 1970 in Milesburg, PA.
