Interstate
81: I-81 is the longest north-south interstate highway in
Pennsylvania. Its southern border is the PA / MD state line, and its
northern border is at the NY / PA state line. It runs for 233 miles in
the state of Pennsylvania and its entire length is part of the National
Highway system. I-81 runs through the following Pennsylvania counties:
Franklin, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, Schuylkill, Luzerne, Lackawana,
and Susquehana.
Construction on Interstate 81 began in 1958, and ended in 1976, although
major renovations have been made after this date. One of the largest
renovation projects was to a stretch of I-80 from the Susquehanna River
to the I-83 Interchange. This is a heavily traveled section, handling
about 100,000 vehicles per day of which about 24% is truck traffic. All
six lanes of the highway and shoulders were renovated, along with ramps
and bridge decks. This was completed in 2004.
I-81 is also known as The American Legion Memorial Highway, The
Scranton-Dunmore Expressway from Exit 187 to Exit 191, The PennCan
Highway from Exit 191 to the New York/Pennsylvania state line, and the
Cumberland Valley Freeway from the MD / PA state line to Harrisburg PA.
Along I-80, emergencies are handled by 911, and call boxes are located
from mile marker 108 to mile marker 158. There are 102 call boxes in
this section. This section was picked because it is prone to dense fog,
high winds, and severe winter weather. Travel Radio is offered at 530 in
Harrisburg PA, and 1610 Wilkes-Barre / Scranton PA. |
