Interstate 84:  The counties of Lackawanna, Wayne and Pike play host to the 54 miles of I-84 though Pennsylvania. Beginning in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, near the city of Scranton, I-84’s 231 mile total length terminates near the town of Sturbridge, Massachusetts at an interchange with the Massachusetts Turnpike, I-90.

In Pennsylvania, I-84 leaves the state at the juncture of Matamoras, PA and Port Jervis, NY and comes within 30 feet of the New Jersey state line as it crosses over the Delaware River at this tri-state juncture. Pennsylvania Interstate 84 begins at I-80, but it actually starts out as a concurrency with Interstate 380 for approximately 5 miles. After that, I-84 breaks from I-380 and turns east, towards the New York border.

Construction of I-84 began in 1967 and was completed in 1978. The final portion in 1978 was between I-84’s exit 8 and Interstate I-380 where the concurrency begins that connects to I-80.

In the 1990’s, most all of I-84 was rebuilt. The only new construction was in 1999 when a massive interchange was constructed connecting I-84 with the Lackawanna Valley Industrial Highway, now known as the Robert P. Casey Highway.

Interstate 84 has a mile-based junction numbering system in Pennsylvania. New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts have sequential junction numbering on Interstate 84.
