Interstate
95: I-95 is the main highway on the East Coast of the United
States. Of I-95’s total length of 1927 miles, the State of Pennsylvania
is home to a mere 51 miles. For the City of Philadelphia, I-95 is the
probably the most important stretch of highway within its borders.
The entire 51 miles of I-95 covers much more than just the “City of
Brotherly Love”, and plays an important role to all who work, live, or
travel it. From its southern entry point at the Delaware – Pennsylvania
border at the port city of Marcus Hook to the exodus into New Jersey
from Yardley, Pennsylvania, I-95 hugs the Delaware River.
I-95 is known as the Delaware Expressway for this reason, but locals
seem to chop its name down to just plain “Ninety Five”. There are few
directions given in the City of Philadelphia that do not start out with
“get on 95”. The only alternative is the local streets of Philadelphia
which, on comparison, show a ten minute ride on “95” equals an hour or
longer trip “on the streets”.
I-95 could be named the “Philly Expressway” and be much more
appropriate. Traffic congestion through the Philadelphia area and the
southern most portions of Bucks County is incredible but manageable
until a vehicle accident occurs, and then you might wish you had packed
a lunch! Because of this well known phenomenon most travelers not
needing to stop in the City of Philadelphia cross the Delaware river
into New Jersey and take the longer but faster I-295 to their more
northern or southern destinations on I-95.
North of Philadelphia, I-95 interchanges at a direct connection to The
Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-276) west of I-95, and east of the same
interchange the roadway becomes I-195, a spur route with direct
connections to NJ I-295 and then The New Jersey Turnpike; at this point
I-95 again becomes the dominant Interstate as the other concurrencies
drop off. |
