Interstate
20: I-20 joins I-59 in Meridian Mississippi and enters the state of
Alabama as one; it runs together through the city of Tuscaloosa,
Alabama, home to the University of Alabama and the Crimson Tide. A spur
in Tuscaloosa is signed as I-359 instead of using an I-20 reference. It
connects downtown Tuscaloosa with the I-20/I-59 combo about 2.5 miles
south of center city.
In Birmingham, I-59 peels off and heads northwest; just east of the I-65
connection that crosses Interstate 20 on its north-south path. This
interchange with I-20/I-59 and I-65 is known as "Malfunction Junction"
due to the left-hand ramps that exist between the two freeways and
overall crowded design. Birmingham’s southern bypass is a spur of I-59
not I-20. I-459 cuts a path around Birmingham running from southwest to
northeast; where I-59 reconnects to I-20 and, a few miles later, melds
back into I-59. Interstate 459 is becoming more and more overrun with
local traffic. The westbound lanes of Interstate 20 contain an extremely
sharp curve near the Birmingham airport, as the highway merges with
Interstate 59. Engineers were forced to build the curve into the route
to avoid a cemetery. |

Just south of Birmingham International
Airport, I-20 and I-59 part company. Interstate 20 turns briefly southeast,
cutting through area hills as it heads through the eastern suburb of Irondale. A
substandard ramp currently carries one lane of travel from Interstate 20 west
onto Interstate 59 south. In contrast, a symmetrical stack interchange with
high-speed flyovers facilitates movements between Interstate 20 and the
Birmingham bypass of Interstate 459. Another ten miles of built-up areas buffer
Interstate 20 before the highway leaves the metropolitan area.
Again Interstate 20 returns to rural scenery, this time, however, the foothills
of Appalachian Mountains are part of the scenic corridor near Anniston, Alabama,
in the far eastern portion of the state. The Talladega Super Speedway is visible
just south of the I-20’s Anniston exit. Anniston has the
dubious honor of being home to the Anniston Army Depot, home
to various weapons of mass destruction including that of Sarin gas.
After a total of 215 miles of Alabama pavement, I-20 leaves
at the Georgia state line, miles from any town or exit.
