Interstate
59: The Alabama portion of I-59 is part of the 445-mile overall
highway linking the New Orleans metro area and the central gulf coast
with Chattanooga, Tennessee and the Mid-Atlantic states. Connection is
via Interstates 75 and 81.
I-59 cosigns with I-20 for approximately 130 miles from the Alabama –
Mississippi state line. Interstate 59 runs through Tuscaloosa, until it
splits from and heads northeast just east of Alabama’s largest city,
Birmingham, at the Birmingham International Airport. Interstate 20-59
maintains a rural character from Meridian, Mississippi to Tuscaloosa,
Alabama. The stretch between Tuscaloosa to Birmingham however is
undergoing incredible growth as the two cities’ suburban areas close the
gap. Much of the almost 40 mile drive between the two communities has
been upgraded to six lanes.
In the city of Birmingham itself, main route Interstate 20-59 serves the
downtown area with spur Interstate 459 carrying the bulk of traffic
bypassing the city. The junction with Interstate 65 in the downtown
area, known as 'Malfunction Junction' is one of the busiest in the
entire state with travelers heading north to Huntsville, Alabama and
Nashville, Tennessee. Approximately 10 miles east of the I-65
interchange, Interstate 59 and 20 go their separate ways, with I-59
reducing to four lanes from six despite becoming the main commuter route
to Trussville, Alabama. |

Northeast of Trussville however, the Interstate
59 takes on a rustic nature, as this four-lane freeway heads north east to
Gadsden and the Georgia state line. Some of the most desolate and primitive
stretches of Interstate in the entire Heart of Dixie lie between Gadsden,
Alabama and the next major city north of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
