Interstate
65: I-65 is the major north – south highway connecting the
Alabama cities of Mobile, Montgomery, and Birmingham. I-65 is the
longest Interstate Highway in Alabama, at 366 miles portal to portal.
I-65 begins in the Southern part of the state in Mobile at the junction
with Interstate 10. It exits the state of Alabama in the unincorporated
area of Elkton in Limestone County and has its final terminus in Gary,
Indiana at I-90. Interstate 65 leads to numerous automotive assembly
plants located in the mid-west and, in places, is nicknamed “Auto
Alley”.
Interstate 65 has a humble beginning just south of the city of Mobile as
a northern offshoot from I-10. I-65 rolls through the city alone, then
picks up its I-165 spur just north of the city. Motorists traveling west
on I-10 can avoid the city traffic and save a few miles by taking I-165
north as soon as they cross Mobile Bay.
In Montgomery, Alabama, I-65 spawns the beginning of a new easterly
Interstate, I-85. Considering the “T” style junction involved, this
interchange is a full dual cloverleaf and was designed with future
expansion in mind. It easily handles the current traffic count in an
orderly fashion. |

As the combined interstates of I-20/59 converge
on Interstate 65 in Birmingham, Alabama, so many wrecks and accidents have
occurred there that the support beams of overpasses melted. 18-wheelers crashed
and burned on two separate occasions, and the numerous collisions that happen
every year caused by the left hand ramps, has led this interchange to be
nicknamed, "Malfunction Junction".
I-65 has a northern spur, I-565, which is a 20 mile long feeder route beginning
in Decatur, Alabama and terminating in downtown Huntsville, Alabama.
