| Interstate
205:
I-205 has only one city of any size worth mentioning along its 11.97
mile route and that is Tracy, CA. I-205 parallels Historic Highway U.S.
50, which is now designated as Business Loop 50, and is just a few miles
shorter than main I-205. While B.L.-205 signs are well placed, it is
still referred to as 11th Street, its local municipal name.
Interstate 205 in
California is a short inter-connecting Interstate Highway joining I-5
just east of Tracy and 5 miles south of Lathrop, CA and Interstate 580,
about 2 miles south of the new town of Mountain House. I-205 (and I-180
in Illinois) are the only 3-digit interstates highways that do not serve
any cities of 50,000 or greater population.
Although short in
length and miles from any major cities, I-205 is frequently congested,
being the main route between the San Francisco Bay Area and the
Stockton/Modesto/Manteca areas in the Northern San Joaquin Valley.
Currently it handles an average of 50,000 vehicles per day. It is only
four lanes wide in its entire length. On September 30th 2005,
The Modesto Bee Newspaper reported that funding has been approved to
widen I-205 to six lanes between Interstate 5 and 11th Street (B.L.-205)
in Tracy. In the August 2nd 2006 edition, they reported that
road closures were to be expected with traffic re-routed by the State
Police while a major bridge along the construction route was dismantled
as part of the current level of planned work. Completion of the entire
project is expected by 2007. |
