Interstate 505:  I-505 is unusual for an Interstate highway in that it didn’t start out as a conversion of an existing road. Most other Interstates today replaced an existing state or U.S. highway.

I-505 connects Interstate 5 to Interstate 80 for drivers traveling west to the San Francisco Bay Area and Napa Valley region; and the reverse for those heading north for camping and hunting in Redding and surrounding areas.

I-505 is primarily a rural interstate with 30 of its 33 miles categorized as rural and the remaining three miles as urbanized. I-505 is not as well traveled as I-80 and I-5. I-505 does not traverse any towns but does run through the city of Vacaville, which is its southern terminus. Its beginning with Interstate 5 is in isolated Yola County, a few miles south of the tiny hamlet of Dunnigan.

While the highway traffic counts may not seem low by other states' standards, it is low for such a major connector between Interstates 5 and 80. Notably, with the construction and recent completion of the California 113 freeway between Interstates 5 and 80 between Woodland and Davis, some traffic has deferred to that route to reach communities northeast of Vacaville along Interstate 80.
