Interstate 291: I-291 in Connecticut is part of what was to be a beltway around Hartford. At a short 6.4 miles long, I-291 still performs its basic function of routing Interstate traffic around downtown Hartford.

Interstate 291 is a very short interstate highway that starts at I-91 in Windsor and ends at I-84 in Manchester.  I-291 is also known as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway for its entire length.

Heading east from I-91, I-291 has a partial interchange with Route 159, and then goes across the Connecticut River on the Bissell Bridge. Originally constructed in 1957, the Bissell Bridge charged a toll until 1988 when the bridge was totally reconstructed. I-291  has an interchange with US 5 in South Windsor and ends at I-84 in a complex interchange that also includes ramps for US 6, US 44, and I-384.
