Interstate 84: Interstate 84 is the primary east – west corridor in the state of Connecticut. I-64 connects the major cities Danbury, Hartford and Waterbury. Four-lane I-84 was completed on July 1, 1971, providing a 231 mile limited-access route from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania. The 98 mile stretch of I-84 in Connecticut runs from the Connecticut / New York State Line to the Connecticut / Massachusetts State Line. With the completion of the "Yankee Expressway" section between Southington and Hartford on December 14, 1969, the route of the original I-84 through Connecticut was complete. The entire 98 miles of I-84 through Connecticut was completed at a cost of $128.3 million.

Connecticut has the longest designated stretch of I-84 of the four states the highway runs through. I-84 enters Connecticut in the city of Danbury then heads north – east to Waterbury. I-84 then proceeds through Waterbury where it intersects with the Route 8 expressway. Interstate 691 terminates at I-84 at the town of Southington at Exit 27. Just before crossing the Connecticut River in Hartford, I-84 intersects Interstate 91 at rivers edge at Exit 50, and then I-84 crosses the river on the stone arched Bulkeley Bridge (named after former Hartford Mayor Morgan B. Bulkeley). An interchange with Interstate 384 begins at I-84 Exit 59 in East Hartford and is the Interstate’s only spur route.

North of Hartford I-84 is known as the Wilbur Cross Highway. I-84 crosses into Massachusetts near Mashapaug in Tolland County, Connecticut. In comes to an end eight miles into the State of Massachusetts when it connects with Mass Turnpike I-90.

A widening project along the stretch of I-84 through Waterbury and Cheshire, Connecticut has been besieged by cost overruns, delays, and alleged construction defects. State and federal officials have launched criminal investigations in reference to this project. This escapade has cooled local enthusiasm for a proposed $2 Billion reconstruction of the congested I-84 Mixmaster interchange in downtown Waterbury. Cost estimates for the Mixmaster interchange replacement project have increased to $3 billion. Connecticut’s Attorney General has begun a lawsuit against the contractor and an engineering firm in response to threats from the U.S. DOT to withhold funds for the project.
