Interstate 91: Interstate 91 is a 290 mile backbone highway for western New England. The 58 mile section of I-91 in Connecticut is the primary north-south corridor through the central section of the state. Throughout Connecticut; I-91 serves the more populated areas in addition to old industrial cities, including New Haven, Hartford and Meriden.

Interstate 91 in Connecticut is part of High Priority Corridor 66: Its starting point is New Haven where I-91 grows out of a full interchange with Interstate 95. Heading north to Meriden, I-91 finds its first interplay with the rest of the highway system as Interstate 691 branches off to the west and makes its first complete interchange with Interstate 84. I-84 and I-91 meet up again about 20 plus miles further north, where they interchange directly in mid-town Hartford. I-91 continues its vertical climb northward.

About 5 miles north of Hartford, I-91 and I-84 meet again for a third time through the spur known as Interstate 291. This hourglass design adds much versatility to both roads in the Hartford area making them both more accessible to other secondary highways and suburban centers, and is a stop gap replacement for the proposed-but-never-built I-91 beltway around Hartford.
