Interstate
95:
Interstate 95 enters New England in Connecticut, and follows along the
southern part of the state within miles of the coast. I-95 then curves
back northward, passing into Rhode Island. It is the main north-south
Interstate Highway on the East Coast of the United States, running in a
general east-west direction for 112 miles through Connecticut. The
majority of I-95, west (south) of the New London area, is part of the
Connecticut Turnpike, connecting to the New England Thruway in New York
state.
I-95 leaves the Turnpike in East Lyme, CT just west of New London. I-95 then
continues east through that city towards Westerly, Rhode Island and becomes the
Jewish War Veterans Memorial Highway.
Interstate
395 is I-95's only spur in Connecticut. It runs from I-95 west of New London,
then north along the Connecticut Turnpike to where it splits, just south of
Danielson, CT. From there it continues north on a newer section of freeway,
meeting Interstate 90 and 290 south of Worcester, Massachusetts. |

Interstate
95 is one of the nation's most congested highways. High population, urbanization
and dozens of closely spaced interchanges contribute to the problem. There are
major construction and realignment projects planned through 2012 addressing the
myriad of changes needed in the State to improve not only traffic throughout
but, more importantly, the safety of travelers on I-95 in Connecticut.
