Drowsiness blamed for Neches River accident
By Jessica Savage
The Lufkin Daily News
"Sleepiness is to blame for a one-vehicle accident on the Neches River bridge Wednesday night in which a tractor-trailer truck overturned, seriously injuring its driver.
David Detz, 51, of Wisconsin, lost control of his rig at about 10 p.m. on U.S. Highway 59 south. According to a local state trooper, Detz fell asleep, woke up as his rig drifted onto the shoulder and overcorrected his steering, causing the load of bakery goods he was hauling to overturn. A left wheel struck the concrete portion of the bridge, splitting the rig in two.
The truck portion Detz was in went through the bridge's metal guardrails and onto the river bank below, where it came to rest on the riverbank. The trailer overturned, "exploding into pieces" and blocking both southbound lanes of U.S. 59 for more than six hours, said trooper Miles Holland of the Texas Department of Public Safety in Lufkin."
