Interstate
16: I-16 is one of the intrastate - interstates as it has its entire
169 mile route inside the state of Georgia.. I-16 begins in the western
part of the state at Macon, GA where it intersects with I-75. Its
eastern terminus is at the Martin Luther King Blvd exit in downtown
Savannah, GA. Interstate 16 cuts an east-west path through the state of
Georgia, and is one of the 13 two-digit interstate highways, that are
continuous and totally located within a single state. . It is officially
designated as the James Gillis, Sr. Memorial Highway in honor of the
late longtime Georgia Highway Department director. I-16 is also known as
Georgia State Route 404.
I-16 in downtown Savannah intersects with I-516 and I-95, the main
north-south highway in the eastern United States. U.S. 25/U.S. 301
connects Statesboro to I-16 in Bulloch County. The next major highway
crossing is the U.S. 1/I-16 junction in Emanuel County; U.S. 1 leads
northward to Swainsboro, Augusta, and ultimately to Columbia, S.C.

Route 1 was the main north-south route on the
Eastern Seaboard. . In the Macon area, I-16 intersects with U.S. 23, U.S. 80,
and U.S. 129 before terminating at I-75 northwest of downtown. U.S. 80 was the
main highway between Savannah and Macon before the Georgia Highway Department
constructed I-16. U.S. 80 parallels I-16 to its north
I-16 opened in sections over the twelve-year period between 1966 and 1978, in
order to enable easy commercial and consumer goods movement between the Port of
Savannah and the I-75 corridor, most especially the Atlanta metropolitan area.
Construction on the first segment, 16.2 miles in Laurens and Treutlen counties,
began in March 1963.
The State of Georgia constructed I-16 to provide the most direct route from
Savannah to Macon. In doing so, I-16 bypassed most of the intermediate towns
along parallel U.S. 80: Statesboro, Swainsboro, Dublin, and Jeffersonville, GA.
I-16 is four lanes wide. Approximately forty exits exist over its 169 miles. In
the mid-2000s, plans were underway to re-build the I-16 / I-75 interchange and
to widen I-16 to six lanes in the Macon area.
