| Interstate
20: I-20 is 1,508 miles long, running through the southeastern
U.S.. Starting in the west at Kent, Texas, I-20’s eastern terminus is
in Florence, South Carolina. Along the last third of its path, I-20
comes through the downtown of Georgia cities Atlanta and Augusta.
Georgia’s east-west portion of I-20, 201
miles, is so popular for the attractions accessible from it that a web
site called, Georgia’s Treasures Along I-20, has been created to provide
tourists with a guide of the area. I-20 enters Georgia from Alabama in
an extremely rural non-descript region of both states. To the east I-20
exits the state over the Savannah River Bridge.
I-20 does a complete interchange with Interstate 75 and Interstate 85 in
the middle of downtown Atlanta, Georgia. To look at the road pattern
from the air or even on a map, it provides a picturesque vision with a
distinct sense of symmetry. This multiple cloverleaf of triple freeways
is better known as the Downtown Connector. I-20 through the Greater
Atlanta area is called the Ralph D. Abernathy Freeway. |

Interstate 20 tangles with the huge I-85 bypass
system known as I-285 before and after it travels through Atlanta. This beltway
around Atlanta is a major highway system unto itself that feeds I-20, I-75 and
I-85 traffic back and forth between North and South versions of its inner and
outer loops. While east-west traffic can take advantage of its passage around
downtown Atlanta as a time saver, it’s still quite a hike and you need to judge
the time/mileage factor along with the convenience factor when deciding to use
I-20 or I-285.
Interstate 520 in Augusta, Georgia is a spur route of 1-20 It by-passes the city
to the south then swings north and terminates at Sand Bar Ferry Rd. at the
Georgia, South Carolina border of the Savannah River.
I-420 was planned as a bypass to the south of downtown Atlanta. Due to much
anti-freeway sentiment, I-420 was never completed, and the partially built
portion has been designated as GA Routes 154 & 166. Additionally, it is highly
unlikely that any road will ever be designated as "Route 420," due to that
number being popular in the drug trade.
