Interstate
59: I-59 is a 442 mile highway that runs from Slidell, Louisiana to
about 5 miles south of Hooker, Georgia where it ends at its intersection
with I-24. I-24 swoops down from Tennessee and back up again in a 5 mile
out of state detour dipping just far south enough to scoop up the town
of Hooker and then head north again on its way to Chattanooga. I-59
enters Georgia 21miles to the southwest at the Alabama border in Dekalb
County.
The short excursion into Georgia made by I-59 is fairly uneventful
beyond the welcome to Georgia and then Welcome to Tennessee signs that
are but 15-20 minutes apart depending on your vehicle speed. However
should you decide to exit at the I-59 and I-24 intersection and take an
eight mile excursion east on county roads, you’ll find yourself at the
nationally known destination of Lookout Mountain, GA. An upscale
community nestled in the Appalachian Mountains is like an oasis in the
desert in this part of poor rural America. |
