| Interstate
95: I-95's northern terminus is Houlton, Maine on the Canadian
border, while the southern terminus is in Miami, Florida. The entire
highway stretches 1,907 miles, 113 of which are in Georgia and are along
the so called Gold Coast. Crossing the Savannah River, I-95 enters the
state near Savannah. Savannah is just a few miles inside the Georgia
state line and is the only fair sized city that I-95 comes close
to on its way through the state. In fact it runs west of the city by
about 10 miles and is actually linked to it through the final few miles
of I-16, which it crosses south of Savannah. Only one other small city,
Brunswick, Georgia comes within a few miles of I-95 connected by a local
2 lane highway. For most of the trip through Georgia, I-95 is found to
be close to the Atlantic Coastline and mostly marsh and swampland. I-95
exits Georgia when it crosses the St. Mary’s River into the State of
Florida. I-95 is designated as State Road 405 but is signed as
Interstate 95. I-95 also parallels U.S. Highway 17 for most of its
journey through Georgia. There are 22 exits off of I-95 along Georgia’s
113 mile portion of Interstate. Just north of exit 87, Richmond Hill -
south of Savannah, the interstate has been widened to six lanes all the
way north to the South Carolina State line. |
