Interstate 64: I-64 enters Kentucky at Louisville and cuts an almost west – east path across north central Kentucky. It intersects with Interstate 65 Traffic from southern Illinois and Indiana on its way eastwards.

The bulk of the Louisville traffic can be avoided by using by-pass Interstate I-264. This route cuts around Louisville to the south and is considered the inner beltway. Locally this highway is known as the Watterson Expressway. Westerly traffic on I-64 has the option of spur road I-265. While it is only a partial beltway for I-65 around south and east Louisville, I-64 traffic also uses spur road I-265 for local destinations on the eastern side of Louisville. I-265 does not cross the River into Indiana. Its main intent is to connect Interstate 65 south of downtown and Interstate 71 northeast of downtown. The dangling ends of the Interstate 265 half-beltway are each designated as Kentucky 841. The local designator for I-265, the outer beltway, is the Gene Snyder Freeway.

I-64 then shoots past the state Capital of Frankfort to the south of the city without any direct interstate spur connections. It is, however, connected by highways US 127 direct to the capital area, as well as to US 60 to Frankfort‘s northern residential area.

After leaving the Capital, I-64 takes a dip to the south on entering Lexington, Kentucky and merges with I-75 for about 8 miles as it makes its way through the city. After splitting off of I-75, Interstate 64 continues east, making a northerly turn at Winchester, Kentucky. Then on to the Kentucky – West Virginia border, meandering through small towns and unincorporated areas along its way, till it crosses the Ohio River just south of Ashland, Kentucky at Huntington, WV.

Interstate 64 has a total length of 945 miles and starts in O’Fallon, MO, terminating in the Tidewater area of the Old Dominion State at Bowers Hill in Chesapeake, Virginia. Kentucky contributes to 191 miles of this heavily traveled highway through the heartland.
