Interstate
71: Interstate 71 runs east - west across North-Central Kentucky. It
connects the Louisville Metro Area to the Covington, KY-Cincinnati, OH
Metropolitan Area. It is the shortest two digit interstate in the State
of Kentucky, with 97 miles of roadway.
I-71 largely follows U.S. 42 between Louisville and Cleveland. Its path
cuts a diagonal sweep from southwest to northeast. Interstate 71 begins
its existence at the intersection of I-64, 65 and 71 in Louisville,
Kentucky where it forms the notoriously complicated web of highways and
on/off ramps known as the Kennedy Interchange or unofficially, the
Spaghetti Junction. As part of the larger Ohio River Bridge Project,
improvements and upgrades are planned for this interchange. Primary
focus is on the construction of a new Interstate 265 bridge ("West End
Bridge") and doubling capacity of the Interstate 65 Downtown Bridge by
building a parallel span for northbound traffic. Other improvements
planned for the Interstate 64, 65, and 71 interchange are significant as
well.

Proposed as of this writing, are increased
capacity for the ramp system, a new interchange design at Mellwood Avenue and
Interstate 64, a new partial interchange at Interstate 71 and Frankfort Avenue /
Ohio Street, and a realignment of Interstate 64 between Interstate 65 and
Interstate 71.
The rest of the trip on I-71 is relatively uneventful, pleasant driving. I-71
and I-75 run concurrently from their joining in Walton, Kentucky, across the
Kentucky / Ohio border to downtown Cincinnati.
I-71 then continues solo to its northern terminus at an intersection with
Interstate 90 in Cleveland, Ohio.
