Interstate
68: Interstate 68 (abbreviated I-68), in the State of Maryland, is a
part of the National Freeway system. Interstate 68 is the 112-mile-long
freeway between I-79 at Morgantown, West Virginia, and I-70 near
Hancock, Maryland. The majority of the I-68, 81 miles, is inside the
State of Maryland.
I-68 is one of the approved highway corridors of the 1965 Appalachian
Regional Development Act and is built to full four-lane freeway
standards. It is known as Appalachian Corridor "E". I-68 was fully
completed in 1991.
I-68 is one of the few mainline Interstate highways that do not directly
serve a major metropolitan area of 500,000 or more population; however,
it is an integral part of the national Interstate highway grid, since it
handles westerly traffic to/from the Baltimore-Washington area. From
Baltimore, MD, I-68 heads toward the Ohio Valley and points west.
Maryland's stimulus for the National Freeway was to provide highway
access and economic growth to Western Maryland’s Garrett and Allegany
Counties. |

I-68 highway passes across the Appalachian
Mountains in the Maryland panhandle through the city of Cumberland. One of the
best rock exposures in Maryland, and indeed in the entire northeastern United
States, is located approximately 6 miles west of Hancock; this is I-68’s eastern
terminus in Washington County, where Interstate 68 cuts through Sideling Hill.
Almost 810 feet of strata are exposed in this road cut. Although other exposures
may surpass Sideling Hill in either thickness of exposed strata or in quality of
geologic structure, few can equal its combination of both. This exposure is an
excellent outdoor classroom where students of geology can observe and examine
various sedimentary rock types, structural features, and geomorphic
relationships. Unfortunately, in winter, the Sidling Hill area is prone to
hazardous roadway conditions and is one of the few east coast Interstate road
locations guaranteed to have a few closings each winter.
The Sideling highway exhibit is also home to one of the most beautiful scenic
overlooks and even has a rest area and welcome center at the West Virginia side
to facilitate the westerly view.
