Interstate 81: Interstate 81 (abbreviated I-81), in the state of Maryland, is an 11-mile highway running through Washington County in Western Maryland.

I-81 crosses the Potomac River and traces the path of the Appalachian Mountains, entering Maryland from West Virginia, a few miles south of Hagerstown.

Known as the Veterans Memorial Highway here, I-81 crosses through Maryland at one of the narrowest parts of the state. It passes to the west of Hagerstown and serves as a major north-south trucking corridor, often as a bypass of the busier and more urban Interstate 95 to the east.

While passing through the "Hub City" of Hagerstown, MD, I-81 intersects with Interstate 70. There are no other Interstate connections or spur roads within the State of Maryland.

Continuing North, I-81 passes by Hagerstown Regional Airport, located a mile south of the Pennsylvania border. I-81 actually forms the airport's western boundary. At one mile north of the airport, Interstate 81 interchanges with PA 163, located precisely on the Mason-Dixon Line; here I-81 leaves the state of Maryland and enters the state of Pennsylvania.
