Interstate
95: Interstate 95 in the state of Maryland runs approximately 110
miles from the border between Maryland and Delaware, in the northeastern
part of the state, to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, in the southeastern
part of MD, before entering Virginia.
The I-95 route is one of the most heavily traveled Interstate highways
in Maryland, especially between Baltimore and Washington, despite
alternate routes along the corridor, such as the Baltimore-Washington
Parkway, U.S. Route 1, and U.S. Route 29. There are eight major spurs
off of I-95 in Maryland.
Once I-95 clears it last spur hurdle, it makes a bee-line for the
Delaware border as the “John F, Kennedy Memorial Highway”.
I-95 leaves Baltimore proper as eight lanes, then down-sizes to six
lanes once it crosses Maryland Route 24. There is still plenty of
traveling traffic as it approaches Newark, Delaware, and meets up with
new east-west traffic bound for and from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, New
Jersey, and other major points north. |

At the Virginia State line, I-95 enters Maryland
concurrent with the I-495 Capital Beltway. This 8 lane concurrence then spurs
off I-295, the southern-most access route into Downtown Washington, D.C. Once in
town, I-295 spurs into I-395 and heads west then south toward Virginia,
providing DC access from the west. (DC I-395 is not to be confused with Maryland
I-395 in Baltimore).
In Beltsville, MD, I-95 continues its solo flight north till it reaches I-195, a
spur into Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Then it encounters I-895
which feeds the Fort McHenry Tunnel, which consists of four curved tunnels of
two lanes each. This Harbor Tunnel Thruway, completed in 1985, was the most
expensive single structure on the Interstate system until Boston's Big Dig
project. By 1980 all of the current routing for I-895 was completed with the
exception of the Fort McHenry Tunnel, which was completed in November 1985.
I-95 encounters I-695, the Baltimore Beltway, next and then other lesser spurs,
including
I-395, which leads to the downtown business section of Baltimore. I-795, a spur
serving Maryland Route 140 and the Interstate is comically called Secret I-595
because it exists, it is just not acknowledged by Interstate signage; in fact,
I-795 continues to be known as US Route 50 between the Capital Beltway and
Annapolis, MD
