DOT#:     -or-    Carrier Name:

Interstate 84: I 84 in Massachusetts is an Interstate Highway that begins at the I-81 interchange near Scranton, PA, runs through New York and Connecticut, and has its northern terminus in Sturbridge, Massachusetts where it intersects with I-90 (the Massachusetts Turnpike that serves that entire state as a major east – west corridor).  I -84 has a total length of 230 miles, while only the last 8 miles are actually in the state of Massachusetts.

I-84 serves the city of Sturbridge through its connection to local highway Route 131. Barely a mile north of Sturbridge, I-84 does a complete interchange with state Highway 20. The 20 East connection serves the cities of Charlton and Worcester, and 20 West will take you to Brimfield and Palmer Massachusetts.

The original roadway, which later became I-84 in Massachusetts, was the Wilbur Cross Highway Extension. It was built to reach Route 20 in Sturbridge, MA in 1952. I-84 was known as I-86 for a short time but in June of 1984 the Massachusetts DPW changed it back to I-84 when the remaining portions of the route previously named MA 15 were completed.
