I-91 connects with east – west Interstate 90 in the northern section of Springfield, MA and then passes through Chicopee, Holyoke and Northampton. From there it’s a forested ride in rural Massachusetts until it crosses into Vermont without coming across any other major towns or cities in Massachusetts.  

There are two Spur routes that keep the traffic out of downtown Springfield and they are I-291 and I-391. They do an excellent job of looping around Springfield and also serve as part of the interchange between I-90 and I-91.
