DOT#:     -or-    Carrier Name:

Interstate 93: I-93 in Massachusetts, when viewed from a map, looks like it may have begun life as I-95; it makes I-95 look like the Boston by-pass. Such is not true however, and I-93 is a stand alone major traffic carrier and an escape route to Vermont and New Hampshire.

I-93 ‘s southern half, leaving Boston proper, carries the majority of the traffic leaving Boston that eventually ends up on I-95 South. In that way, it does get treated as an I-95 spur road.  However, I - 93 serves the Coastal towns of Quincy, Milton, Braintree and the Weymouth’s as a local access highway to those towns and to Route 28, the Martha’s Vineyard resort areas roadway.

With a total length of 210 miles, only 56 miles of it exist in Massachusetts.  Starting with I-93’s southern terminus, the outgrowth of I-95, in Canton, MA, I-93 crosses into New Hampshire at the town of Methuen, MA. While it has no spur routes of its own it does cross I-495 just south of its border crossing in Methuen, MA.

On I-93’s journey north it skrits many smaller towns and only connects with the mid sized cities of Medford, Somerville and Walnut Hills. In Walnut Hill, it crosses and changes northerly headings with I-95, completing the inner and outer loop of the Boston Metropolitan area.
