Interstate 95: I-95 gets a name change as the New England Thruway starting way back in New York State in Westchester County (alluding to its final destination). Ninety Two (92) miles of the gateway to New England run through the eastern portion of the State of Massachusetts, where it is generically known as plain old I-95. This Interstate enters Massachusetts from Rhode Island in the city of Attleboro, MA; and in Salisbury, MA it leaves over the New Hampshire State line.

The original route of I-95 was to have been what is now designated as I-93, and the I-95 route would have become a spur around Boston. The major spur, I-495, actually covers more mileage in the state of Massachusetts than its parent I-95.

I-495 begins near where I-95 enters the state from the south via a second spur, I-195.   I-195 makes an eastern path to the Cape Cod/Martha’s Vineyard traffic passageway, until I-495 is born near the I-195 and State Route 28 intersection. I-195 then makes a wide loop west then north of the Boston/I-95 area and covers all the major cities in the Boston MSA western perimeter. Its 120 mile loop finally closes at the northern terminus where it meets its parent again less than 2 miles from where I-95 leaves the state at the New Hampshire State line.

I-95, in Massachusetts, is a study in contradictions in as far as the purpose of this main Interstate and its relationship with SPUR routes.
