About Michigan

Michigan, surrounded by four of the Great Lakes, contains the longest shoreline of any other U.S. state except Alaska. With more than 2,400 miles of shoreline, Michigan’s residents own more recreational boats than any other state, and enjoy their water wonderland. Census 2000 counted Michigan’s population at 9,938,444. The capitol of Michigan is Lansing. Other cities with high populations include Warren, Ann Arbor, Flint, Livonia and Sterling Heights.

Michigan remains a land of enormous natural splendor, each separate region containing its own distinct flavor. From sand dunes to mountain ski resorts, deeply timbered wilderness regions and flowing water all around, the beauty of Michigan can take the breath away. One can take a tour of Native American villages or of the 115 lighthouses that grace the shores. In Michigan, one can always find something to do.
