Mississippi Trucking Laws and Regulations

The federal government restricts the size and weight of trucks that can travel on the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways. Trucks are limited to:

  • 80,000 pounds for the gross weight of a vehicle,

  • 20,000 pounds for a single axle, or

  • 34,000 pounds for a tandem axle.

However, states have the option of issuing permits allowing overweight or oversized vehicles to travel on these highways or any other roads.

In Mississippi, the Department of Transportation issues these permits. Companies may apply for a “blanket permit,” which allows them to issue their own oversized permits within certain parameters; for example, the width of the oversized vehicle must be less than 14 feet. Oversize permits often require specific routing, which takes into consideration bridge and highway conditions, as well as clearance. Permits may only be issued for workdays, Monday through Saturday. There are no oversize permits for Sundays.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires that all trucks carry insurance: a minimum of $750,000 liability insurance, $500,000 cargo insurance, and a $10,000 bond. In Mississippi, applicants for oversize permits must also file a $25,000 bond or public endorsement with the Department of Transportation, for any damage to the highway.
