New Hampshire Trucking Laws and Regulations

The federal government restricts the size and weight of trucks that can travel on the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways. Trucks are limited to:

  • 80,000 pounds for the gross weight of a vehicle,

  • 20,000 pounds for a single axle, or

  • 34,000 pounds for a tandem axle.

However, states have the option to issue permits allowing overweight or oversized vehicles to travel on these highways or any other roads.

In New Hampshire, all trucks that are more than 8 feet 6 inches wide or 13 feet 6 inches high must receive an oversize permit. Exceptions for wide loads include those carrying hay or fodder; exceptions for long loads include those consisting of oversized length of any non-manufactured wood or steel, except trees. All vehicles longer than 110 feet long or higher than 13 feet 6 inches high are required to complete a physical route survey and/or a physical height survey.

Permits are not issued during holidays and are only valid during daylight hours. However, vehicles that are only overweight are not subject to the daylight restrictions. Permits are void during slippery pavement conditions or inclement weather, including fog, haze, heavy or freezing rain and snow.

All overweight vehicles are subject to the new Bridge Overweight Permit Review, which can be found online at the New Hampshire Department of Transportation website.

Oversized trucks in New Hampshire must maintain the insurance coverage required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration: $750,000 in liability insurance, $500,000 in cargo insurance, and a $10,000 bond.
