Clearfield,
Pennsylvania lies on the western bank of the lovely Susquehanna
River. Named by white settlers for the large clearings of undergrowth
made by grazing herds of bison, the Indian village that once stood there chose a
different name: Chinklaclamoose, meaning 'no one tarries here willingly.' Times have changed and the population of more than 6,500 (Census 2000 data)
appears to be quite happy to tarry in this lovely little borough.
Incorporated in 1840, the town is
the county seat of Clearfield
County. Situated in West-Central
Pennsylvania, the County is ideally located for business and commerce;
Interstate 80 runs directly through it, providing direct access to markets in
both the Northeastern U.S. as well as the Midwest. With a strong business
climate and a promising economic future, three industrial parks are in place,
and several more lie in the works. The Clearfield Professional Office Park is a
new addition too. Clearfield's Economic
Development Office is ready to aid any firms looking to relocate to this
fantastic area.
Clearfield County residents enjoy
its many acres of pristine forest, shimmering lakes and clean mountain streams. The Curwensville Dam was built in order to protect Clearfield and other towns
from spring floods off the Susquehanna. This formed the wonderful Curwensville
Lake area, almost 2900 acres of water and recreational land use. Perfect for camping, hiking and fishing, the lake attracts many boating
enthusiasts also. Another great place to hike as well as bike is the
Clearfield through Grampian Rails
to Trails.
Clearfield County residents pride
themselves as being the entry to the Pennsylvania
Wilds, a region that covers twelve counties in the state, and offers more
than two million acres of state and national forestland, where herds of wild elk roam along with other abundant
wildlife. The northern
portion of the County contains the awesome Quehanna
Wilds, which wind through a stunning forest of white birch and leads to
Panther Rocks, a formation made of boulders that range from 80 to 270 feet high.
Four state parks lie within 45 minutes of the Borough of Clearfield, offering
endless outdoor sports and recreation. Bilger's Rocks, found just outside
of the town of Grampian,
are giant sandstone formations that hold within them an ice cave, a must-see for
those who dress warmly.
Clearfield residents celebrate life
each year, hosting the Clearfield
County Fair. The year 2005 will see the 145th fair take place. Full of events like harness racing and livestock shows, plenty of
rides for the kids and some of the best music around for everyone to enjoy, the
Fair's annual event draws people from all over the region. One of the
biggest and the best fairs in an area that thrives on festivals, this one is not
to be missed.
Clearfield, Pennsylvania is an ideal
place to work, live and play. Modern residents and visitors will
definitely want to 'willingingly tarry here longer'.
