Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, PA's Capitol City is home to the unique and ornate Capitol Building.  Built in 1906 in the Italian-Renaissance Style, the 52-million pound vaulted dome can be seen for miles and was modeled after St. Peter's Basilica of Rome. At the building's dedication ceremony, President Teddy Roosevelt declared it, "The handsomest building I've ever seen."

Located on the banks of the Susquehanna River, Harrisburg has always been an important transportation center.  In the 1800's, the city played a large role in the development of the Pennsylvania Canal System.  With the modern additions of railroads, airports and superhighways, Harrisburg emerged as one of the most vital distribution points and commercial centers of the East.

Situated in Dauphin County, where it also serves as county seat, Harrisburg's population numbered almost 49,000, according to the Census 2000.  The Harrisburg Regional Area includes both Cumberland and Perry counties.  This wonderful part of the south-central portion of the state includes the famous Pennsylvania Dutch Region.  Home to covered bridges and Amish and Mennonite communities, where horse-drawn buggies still travel the roads, much of the area retains a rustic, old-fashioned flavor and charm.  Speaking of flavor, the town of Hershey is found here, 'The Sweetest Place on Earth,' where the aroma of chocolate fills the air before one reaches the town borders.  Offering more than just chocolate bars, Hershey also has HersheyPark, a world-famous 100-acre theme park and Zoo America is right across the street.  A trip to Hershey satisfies all kinds of tastes.

The Greater Harrisburg Area offers something for everyone.  Cumberland County is a nature enthusiast's dream, with miles of excellent fishing streams and thousands of acres of untouched, pristine wilderness.  Skiing, snowmobiling, hiking and hunting are just a few of the outdoors sports enjoyed here.  Quaint, charming towns and villages lie scattered throughout the area, with historic downtown districts waiting to be discovered.  Antique buffs will think they have entered Paradise as they uncover the treasures awaiting them.  The entire region is known as a culinary treat, from the fabulous Pennsylvania Dutch cooking to the town of Carlisle, who's reputation for gourmet dining is world-class.

History echoes throughout the Harrisburg region.  Artifacts from the French-Indian wars are kept carefully preserved in the many museums.  Revolutionary and Civil War sites abound here.  For those with more modern inclinations, Harrisburg itself is the place to be.  The lovely City Island plays host to minor league baseball games as well as having a profession indoor soccer arena.  A restored carousel delights children, and train and carriage rides around the island are enjoyed by all ages.

Music plays a vital role in Harrisburg life, with outdoor summer concerts on the riverfront. Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz has found its home here, and sultry sounds fill the night air.  The Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra lends a more classical touch, while local performers entertain in the many nightclubs.  The Art Association of Harrisburg is just one place to view the fine arts of the city.  Many small galleries and art exhibits are scattered throughout the city.  The Harrisburg Area Community College and the Widener University offer many cultural programs, and the Harrisburg Community Theater and the Open Stage of Harrisburg provide wonderful theatrical performances.

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a lovely river city, offers urban amenities and a unique and charming atmosphere inthis delightful area of the state.
