Smoke, fog blamed for 2 deaths on I-95
By Jeannette Rivera-Lyles
"Early-morning fog mixed with smoke from brush fires caused a deadly pileup Sunday on Interstate 95 in Brevard County, killing two tractor-trailer drivers and injuring two other people. Portions of I-95 were shut down for almost eight hours.
The fiery crash involved three tractor-trailers, a box truck and a Ford Escort. It was blamed on the poor visibility caused by the smoke-fog haze.
With no substantial rain forecast for Brevard, the Florida Highway Patrol isn't taking any chances on another such crash. It is closing sections of I-95 and the BeachLine Expressway daily from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. until conditions improve.
"We can shut them down in 10 minutes if need be, but it might not be fast enough -- as we saw this morning," Highway Patrol spokeswoman Kim Miller said.
About 6:10 a.m., Miller said, troopers were positioning themselves along I-95 in Brevard to close down the highway. A handful of minor crashes had already occurred because of low visibility."
