Interstate
26: I-26 is a major east-west artery serving the southeastern US.
Along the route, I-26 serves the South Carolina capital of Columbia and
with the addition of I-385 spur, is a major route in the Greenville /
Spartanburg area.
I-26 leaves the state at the North Carolina border on its way to
Ashville, NC in the Piedmont region. This roadway is mostly a four-lane
highway except in the Columbia and Charleston area, which add lanes and
interchange feeder roads.
I-26 runs from the junction of US Route 11 and 23 in Kingsport,
Tennessee in a southeasterly direction to its terminus in Charleston,
South Carolina at State Route 17, near the Atlantic coast.
I-26 connects directly to route 17 in downtown Charleston and also north
and south of the city via the western side partial beltway of I-526.
This makes for a very efficient access way to the industrial areas just
outside the city and eases traffic along the main roadway into the heart
of town. |
