High winds blamed for several truck accidents on I-77

By Ana Ribeiro and Ruth Tisdale

"Three tractor-trailers and two smaller hauling trucks overturned Sunday afternoon on Interstate 77, blocking two lanes of traffic, state police in Wytheville reported.

Police responded to a call at 3:38 p.m. and headed to mile marker three in Carroll County, where two of the trucks had gone over within five minutes of each other. The distance between the overturned trucks was about two-tenths of a mile, police said, but traffic still could proceed in one lane.

The trucks were overturned by high winds, which is not unusual in the mountainous area, police said.

A third tractor-trailer crashed near the 2.8 mile marker later Sunday.

Traffic was detoured Sunday to U.S. 52 at Exit 1 off the interstate. Police reported no fatalities or other vehicles involved in the accidents."
