Turnpike crash stops traffic, injures family

By CourierPost Online

"Three people were injured when their Jeep was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer on the New Jersey Turnpike here Monday, police said.

The three, a family from Whitestone, N.Y., were being treated at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, state police said. The accident brought Memorial Day traffic to a standstill for more than an hour in both directions as rescue workers freed the family from the wreckage.

State police said the family's injuries did not appear to be life threatening.

State police estimated traffic was backed up for about 15 miles.

Both southbound lanes and one northbound lane of the Turnpike were reopened at about 4:30 p.m., an hour and 15 minutes after the accident. Both northbound lanes were reopened at about 6 p.m.

State police said a tractor-trailer driven by George Miller of Millersburg, Pa., failed to slow down for traffic and struck the rear of the Jeep Cherokee driven by Barbara Perniciaro.

Three helicopters took Perniciaro, her husband Philip Perniciaro, 49, and daughter Jennifer Honeychild, 19, to Cooper's Trauma Center where all were in serious condition Monday night, state police said."
