The picturesque landscape consists of colorful canyons, deserts, plateaus, mountains and valleys. With such a varied terrain, residents experience summer high temperatures that range between 85 and 100 degrees, while the winter high temperatures average between 25 and 50 degrees.
Utah is home to 2.2 million residents (2000 Census information); while 181,743 live in Salt Lake City, the state capital. The population concentrates most heavily in the cities and towns surrounding the Wasatch Mountains. The area, called the Wasatch Front, is home to major cities such as Layton, Ogden, Orem, Provo, Salt Lake City, Sandy and West Valley City. The remainder of Utah consists of rural areas and wilderness.
