Interstate
64: I-64 in Virginia enters the state in Alleghany County, from West
Virginia near White Sulphur Springs in Greenbrier County. It begins its
300 mile journey to Norfolk, Chesapeake and the Virginia Beach Seashore.
Once across the Allegheny Mountains, I-64 connects with I-81 and
continues the convergence for 30 miles, where I-64 breaks out and heads
east just outside Staunton, Virginia. The entire route of I -64
parallels existing major inter-regional highways; US-60 from West
Virginia to Lexington, US-11 from Lexington to Staunton, US-250 from
Staunton to Richmond, US-60 from Richmond to Norfolk, and Military
Highway (VA-165 and US-13) from Norfolk to Bowers Hill in Chesapeake.
I-64 has a broad sampling of every type of terrain found in the state.
I-64 experiences rugged mountainous regions in the west, rolling hills
that taper to a gentle slope in the center of the state, then nearly
flat coastal plains, and finally flat salt marsh as it nears the
Chesapeake Bay area. |

Early in the construction phase, portions of
I-64 were embattled as were many Interstate projects of that time frame. This
time, however, the arguments were just the opposite of most, in that people
wanted the Interstate and fought to have it built in their part of the state
rather than opposing its construction. The major piece of contention was over a
northern or southern route for the Richmond area connection. The northern route
finally won out after much vacillating on the part of the state and federal
governments.
I-64 has four Interstate spur and loop routes, I-264 the Portsmouth to Norfolk
connector, I-464 the Norfolk to Chesapeake connector, I-564 spur that feeds
Admiral Tausig Blvd. leading to the Pine Beach section of North Norfolk and
I-664 the Hampton Roads Belt Bridge.
