Interstate
81: If I-95 is Eastern Main Street of Virginia, then I-81 is the
Western Main Street. I-95 makes a sweeping north south path starting
in Northernmost Frederick County at the
Virginia West Virginia border, and hugs the Appalachian and Blue Ridge
Mountains south to the dual cities of Bristol Tennessee and Bristol
Virginia.
While the entire length of I-81 provides some diverse terrain, just the
325 mile portion within Virginia takes you from gently rolling &
flatland to beautiful and challenging mountain vistas and from the
smallest quaint country towns to major urban centers.
Interstate 81 parallels U.S. Route 11 through Virginia. It also loosely
parallels The Blue Ridge Parkway. While it is no match for the planned
and guided views from the National Park Service Parkway, it does
traverse similar country and provides an expressway version of this
beautiful and scenic portion of our land; I-81 just does it at 70 Mph in
most spots. |

There are only two auxiliary routes from I-81.
Interstate 381 to Bristol, Virginia is a one and one half mile spur serviced
by north and south interchanges at I-81 exit 3.
Interstate 581 is a six lane highway approximately six miles long and has
cloverleaf type intersections at most of its interchanges with local roads. Many
of these cloverleaf style intersections are known traffic problems and
bumper-to-bumper congestion is almost always expected, with even minor increases
in traffic levels.
Future plans call for I-581 to be upgraded and to become part of a planned
expansion of I-73 which is now only in the state of North Carolina. So, expect
the traffic to remain as is, as no other proposals are currently addressing the
problem. I-581 terminates in downtown Roanoke, VA.
Interstate 81 connects with three other Interstate Highways in Virginia. In the
deepest southern portion of VA, I-81 interchanges and runs concurrent for about
10 miles with I-77, connecting it to West Virginia then Ohio and northward to
the Great lakes area at the western interchange, and south to Charlotte, North
Carolina from the eastern end of the interchange.
Interstate 64 joins up with I-81 from the west at the southern interchange in
Lexington, VA and stays concurrent for about 30 miles. I-64 breaks off to the
east at Staunton, VA and continues on to Richmond and its ultimate end in
Norfolk, VA.
Just before I-81 leaves the state to the north it interchanges with the short
direct Washington, DC feeder highway known as Interstate 66 in Middletown, VA.
Its also a good turn off point if your ultimate goal is to reach the beaches of
Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey as easy access to I-95 North can be had where
I-66 ends.
All in all, I-81 is a scenic highway with many varied and important destinations
along its Virginia mileposts, and is a
major economic corridor for the
more rural western half of the state.
