Interstate
85: I-85 In Virginia is the 69 mile northern end of this interstate
with its terminus in Petersburg, Virginia, where it meets Interstate 95.
I-85 enters Virginia in Mecklenburg County, VA at the North Carolina
border in the County of Warren. Interstate 85’s main thrust is as a
connector from The Atlanta Georgia area to the Mid Atlantic States and
to I-95.
The traffic along I-85’s four lanes is almost 25% large commercial
trucks with a consistent vehicle count. The Virginia portion convenes
through some of the state’s less populated areas, and is mostly Pine
Tree forested terrain and gently rolling hills. There are no
incorporated cities along I-85’s extreme southern portion; and of the
few cities it passes, South Hill, VA with a population of approximately
4,500 is the largest. It is probably best known as the last bastion of
quiet rural highway as you head north into the extreme opposite
surroundings of the Mid Atlantic corridor.
While I-95 Parallels U.S. Route 1 from Richmond, VA northward, I-85
assumes the duty from Richmond, VA south, well into North Carolina until
they do a radical split just before the Raleigh-Durham area. |

The only auxiliary route for I-85 in Virginia is
tentatively planned for completion in 2011. The new approved designator of I-785
will be an economic building block for a coalition of counties in North Carolina
and Virginia. I-785 will run 45 miles from Interstate 40 and Interstate 85 in
Greensboro, North Carolina, to U.S. Route 29; I-785 will terminate at U.S. Route
58 / U.S. Route 360 in Danville, Virginia. It will not connect with the main
I-85 in Virginia however.
