District of Columbia Trucking Laws and Regulations
The federal government restricts the size and weight of trucks that can travel on the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways. Trucks are limited to:
-
80,000 pounds for the gross weight of a vehicle,
-
20,000 pounds for a single axle, or
-
34,000 pounds for a tandem axle.
However, states have the option of issuing permits allowing overweight or oversized vehicles to travel on these highways or any other roads.
The District of Columbia issues permits to vehicles and loads that exceed the legal limits of 8 feet 6 inches wide, 40 feet long and 13 feet 6 inches high. Routes need to be confirmed and established based on the size and weight of the oversized vehicle. Annual permits are available for vehicles up to 70” long, 13 feet 6 inches high, 8 feet 6 inches wide and with a gross weight of no more than 21,000 pounds per axle. Truck cranes and concrete pump trucks up to 9 feet 6 inches wide can also receive an annual permit.
Oversized trucks in the District of Columbia must maintain the insurance coverage required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration: $750,000 in liability insurance, $500,000 in cargo insurance, and a $10,000 bond.
