Weigh Station Needs To Be Open To Improve Safety On I-95
By Staff Reports
Westport News
"Next week will mark the first anniversary of a fiery, multi-vehicle crash that killed four people after a truck's brakes failed while traveling downhill on Route 44 in Avon.
The incident spurred state officials to take a closer look at truck safety. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) stepped up truck inspections at the request of Gov. M. Jodi Rell, who learned in the days after the accident that budget cuts and staff attrition led to a drop in such checks between 2001 and 2004.
The state has continued to crack down on trucking firms, but it's not enough to keep Connecticut's roadways free of truck-related fatalities. Tragedy struck again July 2, when two wheels broke free from a northbound truck on Interstate 95 in Stamford. One of the wheels hit a passing vehicle, killing a female passenger.
That accident struck a chord with some of the Fairfield County state legislators who have urged the governor to extend the operating hours of the weigh station on I-95 in Greenwich. State Sens. Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) and Andrew McDonald (D-Stamford) have waged a crusade of sorts against Rell, arguing that the Greenwich weigh station needs to be open more often in hopes of catching problems before they cause accidents."
