Interstate
64: West Virginia claims 183 miles of the 960 mile I-64 corridor.
Started in 1961, I-64 begins in O’Fallon, Missouri and terminates in
Chesapeake, Virginia. It passes through the WV cities of Huntington,
Charleston, Beckley and Lewisburg. Interstate 64 is part of the West
Virginia Turnpike from Charleston to south of the City of Beckley.
The I-64 section from Sam Black Church to Beckley’s I-77 junction is 32
miles long, and cost about $300 million to build, making it one of the
most costly sections in the entire U.S. Interstate Highway System. It
replaced a winding, mountainous two-lane road, US 60, that was
originally a 90 mile trip. It crosses some particularly rugged terrain,
in one area descending at a 7% grade for almost 5 miles. The made
construction of two emergency truck escape ramps necessary, to help
runaway trucks stop safely. The terrain results in the I-64 crossing the
Kanawha River on major bridges no less than four times in the Charleston
area. I-64 has some spectacular construction, including a very high
bridge over Glade Creek. |

I-64 was, when completed in 1988, one of the
last rural interstates in the country to be constructed where the existing road
was two lanes. It also marked the completion of I-64 from St. Louis, Missouri to
Norfolk, Virginia. Tolls are still collected on the portion of I-64 which is
shared with Interstate 77 on the West Virginia Turnpike between Beckley and
Charleston. The last two interstate projects in West Virginia were this section
of I-64, and the reconstruction of the 88-mile West Virginia Turnpike. The
mostly two-lane turnpike was rebuilt to four-lane interstate standards at a cost
of about $700 million, completed in 1987. This is one of a handful of
interstates that got 90% federal funding, and federal approval to charge a toll,
due to the extremely high construction cost.
There used to be a tunnel on the West Virginia Turnpike. Called Memorial Tunnel,
it had one two-lane tube, and was about 25 miles south of Charleston. In the
1980’s reconstruction, the tunnel was bypassed with an open cut about 500 feet
deep. You can still see both tunnel portals from the road, on the west side of
the highway.
