Interstate 70: I-70 makes a quick 15-mile path from the Pennsylvania state line to the Ohio state line through the city of Wheeling. On its way through town, you encounter the Wheeling Tunnel, where I-70 westbound is reduced to one lane. The second lane is an exit only and there is no passing in the tunnel, which is strictly enforced. I-70 is mostly a tight four-lane 1960's-style freeway through Wheeling proper, while east of Wheeling is more open road. I-70 eastbound through Wheeling is an interesting ride. Just after the Ohio border you cross a long viaduct, then an old steel arch bridge over the Ohio River, followed by a quick, tight exit into the downtown area, then the Tunnel and as you exit the tunnel an interesting interchange with US 250 with a quick rise to an elevated portion of I-70.

The complimentary bypass road around the Wheeling West Virginia metropolitan area (and a way around the truck restrictions and prohibitions of the Wheeling Tunnel) is Interstate 470. It is a better route for through traffic than Interstate 70, as its 10.63 miles are far less congested and void of the loops and turns through Wheeling on I-70. The western terminus is I-70 near Blaine, Ohio and the eastern terminus is I-70 in southeast Elm Grove, West Virginia. There are junctions with Ohio State Highway 7 and with West Virginia State Highway 2 on either side of the Ohio River.

I-470 is the only 3-digit Interstate in West Virginia.
